"I never sleep, 'cause sleep is the cousin of death."
- Nas, N.Y. State of Mind

This is so incorrect, and a complete lie. Bottom line is... you sleep.

  1. "Sleep is the cousin of death" is a phrase that goes back to greek mythology

  2. YEah.... I like this line for once

  3. Regardless, I have little doubt that Nas does, in fact, sleep.

  4. Besides, how can SLEEP be a cousin of anything? It's not even a human being! LOLOLOLOL LITERAL MEANING!!

  5. No, nobody ever said "sleep is the COUSIN of death".

    Nice try, though.

  8. This was a pretty weak post. You know what he means. Trying too hard.

  9. Great lyric, great lyricist. Ya blew it.

  10. Actually, if you never sleep, you'd be dead real quick. Stupid rhyme with commenters trying way too hard to defend it. Swing and a miss (as usual).

  11. It is a phrase from Shakespeare's "Hamlet," but regardless it's definitely not a good approach to everyday life.

  12. def missed the mark on this one. beyond the fact that you've taken a pretty meaningful line way too literally, there's no way nas should be on this site with the likes of gucci mane. disrespect..

  14. HA! I read a good chunk of these today, and I think they are hilarious. There have been times (in my old blog) where I have posted very very similar posts. I might have to start doing these again once a week, and quite potentially emailing you half of my play list on my ipod for future critiques.

This totally reminds me of the time I met Gza. I got to hang out with him, and I thought it was so cool. He was eventually interviewed (I actually got the footage, maybe I will have to post it?) and one of the questions asked was "what's your favorite book?"

You'd better believe he responded with "Iono, the dictionary?"

It's not quite the same, but I figured I'd mention it.

  15. Nas shouldn't even be here, just like Pac.

  16. it's sad that you put lyrics on here just because you don't understand them.

  17. This is one of the best lines ever, from one of the best songs ever.
    It should not be here.

" I inhale deep, like the words in my breath, I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death"

  18. Dude, it's from the *Iliad*. You may lose the authority to make fun of Young Jeezy if you direct the same mockery at epic poems from 700 BC. Nas has enough brains to go to the source for this, and it should be apparent on hearing that it's a beautiful turn of phrase.

  19. Geez maybe getting caught "sleeping" also has a non-literal meaning that plays on the original material . Weak effort .

  20. although according to the greeks, Hypnos (sleep) is the BROTHER of Thanatos (death), I agree that this line is ONLY stupid if you take it literally when it's clearly not meant to be.

Check out page 270 here https://spakrs.eserver.org/books.iliad
and also see the entry for Hypnos on wikipedia.

  21. wow. Have you ever read a poem, or a piece of fiction with a metaphor in it? Do you know what the term 'sleep' or 'slept on' means in hip-hop vernacular?

    ReplyDelete
  22. seriously blew this. great line from one of the best that's ever done it.
if you want explanantion he's saying this dude is in fear of sleep because of its closeness to death, as if it were a 'realation' > cousin.

    idiiiots.

  23. Homer: "There she met sleep, the brother of death"- Illiad, XIV, 1. 231 & XVI 1. 672

Hesiod: "Sleep, the brother of Death"- The Theogony, 1. 756

    Virgil: "Death's brother, Sleep"- Aeneid

Fouche, Joseph (1763-1820): "Death is an eternal sleep"- cemetery gate

In Latin and Greek mythology, Sleep and Death are literal brothers, the twin sons of Nyx {Nox; Night]

  24. Way to defend Nas's honor, commenters! Maybe now he'll invite you to his house so you guys can talk about metaphors all night.
